The Long Night


Set in Seattle, Washington, the feature documentary film The Long Night gives voice and meaning to the crisis of minors who are forced and coerced into the American sex trade. The film weaves together the stories of seven people whose lives are forever changed by domestic minor sex trafficking. 

The Long Night is not themed to advocate a solution. Instead, it submerges the viewer in the experience of what it has been like for Natalie and Lisa to survive the life; for Tom and Nacole to watch their daughter slip out of their hands; for Andy and his fellow police officers, Brian and Joel, to try and create a more just system. The Long Night is an intimate and visceral testimony to those who have lived this crisis.

The Long Night started as a $25,000 dollar documentary photo grant from the Alexia Foundation. As I spent three months reporting and working to gain access, I realized I needed to make cinema--not still photos--the priority.

As access deepened and the story continued, I worked through the expiration of the grant, investing my finances into the project. Meanwhile, the studio was doing the same; they were turning a multimedia short into a feature length documentary. 

The Long Night went on to win top photojournalism awards at World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International, and the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism.

Discovering audiences wanted the film for advocacy, training, and education, I began a grassroots impact campaign. It helped create policy change in regional government and continues to be used across the country to create change.

In 2017, Journeyman TV signed on as international distributor, quickly adding it to the libraries at iTunes and Amazon.
